Long before the first photographs were made, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham (965–1040) who was born in the Arab city of Basra, Mesopotamia (Iraq), then part of the Buyid dynasty of Persia invented the camera obscura.
