It is like a hairy little caterpillar crawling along an equally hairy twig.

No this day in history that I could find so . . . a note about colouring (not with crayons). Colouring was a very delicate affair which typically,as of 1850, used thirty-six colours. A fine brush was used to carefully apply the colours then they were fixed by breathing on the plate.
